Very Special Effect

Drive with your eyes

Game on

There are so many amazing charities out there. But for the games industry, there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. And that is Special Effect. They do whatever it takes to help people with physical disabilities to enjoy games. And by golly, do they do it well.

Stars in their eyes

We’d heard that they can people with disabilities to play games just with their eyes. Really we thought? Well there was only one way to see if it was possible.

Proof is in the pudding

So the very nice people from Special Effect came down to Neon HQ with their amazing technology and we got the whole team driving around a dirt track on the Dirt 3 console game.

Drives you round the bend

They calibrated the eye scanner with your eyes looking at certain spots. And when the green light went, within a few seconds, you had pretty much got how to control the car. Look up to accelerate, look down to brake, and left goes left and right goes right. In theory!

Go, go, go!

The whole Neon Play team had a go with mixed success. Some of the team seemed to enjoy having a bit of a tour of the forest, while others stayed on track and posted very competitive times.

And the winner is...

Mark won. Oli came last. And you can see from his driving below why he came last…

Oli Christie, CEO of Neon Play commented, “It was incredible to see the Special Effect technology first hand and to actually drive a car using your eyes was strange at first, but then became fairly easy after a while. Special Effect is a wonderful charity giving people with multiple disabilities access to games and that can only be a good thing. We will be supporting Special Effect and look forward to seeing more of their amazing tech in the future.”
